Title: Research-infused teacher-led innovations in university mathematics education: The case of students making problem-solving videos
Abstract:This talk will have a two-layer structure. In the outer layer, I will argue that mathematics educational researchers and university mathematics, who are often mathematicians by training, can productively collaborate around projects that leverage their complementary expertise. The layer will introduce a model for bi-directional knowledge mobilization between teachers and researchers. The model revolves around innovations that teachers lead in their instruction and that researchers assist to study in a disciplined manner. The inner layer will illustrate the model in action with an assignment, in which undergraduate students in a large first-year course video-recorded and peer-reviewed solutions to mathematical problems from past exams. A collaborative teacher-researcher inquiry into the impact of the assignment generated insights of practical and research value.
